Demographics Breakdown

A 2023 NYC Health Department report found that 8% of NYC adults had depression in 2022—slightly above the national average of 7.1%. Depression was more common in women (10%) than men (5%). Additional findings include: * 1 in 5 New Yorkers experiences mental illness symptoms yearly. * Older adults and low-income individuals are more likely to have depression. * In March 2023, 31.5% of New Yorkers reported poor mental health, up from 26% in 2020. * People earning under \$25,000 were twice as likely to report anxiety or depression compared to those making \$100,000+. NYC’s fast-paced lifestyle, along with pandemic stress, isolation, and economic hardship, are likely contributing factors. A 2017 study also showed over 500,000 adults had moderate-to-severe depression at that time.
